In Italy, the pharmacist is also a maker. The farmacista preparatore — the compounding pharmacist — formulates creams and treatments by hand, in the small laboratory behind the pharmacy counter, often tailoring them to the person asking. It's a different tradition from the American one, and it's the one we grew up with. We'd love to share it with you.
This art is 800 years old. It began with the medieval speziali — the apothecaries' guilds of Venice (1258) and Florence (1266), whose members included Dante Alighieri. In Rome, the Spezieria di Santa Maria della Scala — the Popes' pharmacy — prepared its remedies without interruption until 1954. In Italy, the pharmacy is a place of trust — 9 out of 10 Italians say they trust their pharmacist (Censis).
